Each spring, during and after the timeframe when the frost leaves the ground, axle weight restrictions are imposed to protect the investments into our infrastructure. The thawing of the ground increases the moisture content of the subgrade which weakens the structural integrity of the roadway. Spring load restrictions are a strategy to preserve the taxpayers’ investment of the paved and gravel roadway surfaces during the time the roads are most vulnerable to damages.
Minnesota Statute 169.87 provides local agencies, with respect to highways under their jurisdiction, authorization to implement seasonal load restrictions.
Spring load restrictions for the Isanti County Highway System are based on the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Central Seasonal Load Limit Zone starting and ending dates. The exact dates that seasonal load restrictions go into effect and are removed vary depending on frost and weather variations. MnDOT’s website with the most current information is available at: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/loadlimits/index.html
During spring load restrictions, County roads in Isanti County are posted according to the Isanti County Spring Load Restriction Map (PDF)
Isanti County does not issue any overweight permits during the spring load restriction timeframe.
